College Grants

It is a fact but true especially in present era, the average cost per academic year for even four-year degree course comes to about well beyond $20,000. Only students of rich and gentry’ class can stake their claim over education with numbers being comparatively less.

Here comes role of grants in life of students especially for those who like their rich counterparts just try to search light in the darkness. Therefore, college grants are most imperative in a life of student as it makes financially weak students too to garner their individualistic trait through expenses of college education.

These grants precisely vary from student loans and scholarships in the way that like student loans, they don’t have to be repaid, and are especially need based as compared to scholarships, which are primarily based on merit. Government designed these grants making them fall into four categories: Student-specific, Subject-specific, Degree Level and Minority.

If you would like to attain the grant, it is suggested you begin your search from the category student-specific or subject-specific grants. The federal government, in fact, is offering more grants to college students than before and No Child Left Behind Act has been the main catalyst behind this endeavor of government. Such measures incline primary and secondary schools with duty to provide education to every kid rightly deserved without any prejudices.

Such an endeavor would result in higher number of students completing their diplomas. When right guidance in the form of financial and social resources and educator’s expertise and experience is made available to students, then they have a better chance of attending college and choosing best academic and career options.
Federal grant programs have assisted hundreds of thousands of students to fulfill their dreams of achieving higher education. One such key federal grant is the Pell Grant, which has funded millions of low-income students. Since its establishment in 1972, it has remained as one of the most valuable sources of funding financially distressed undergraduate students.

Another grant is the Academic Competitiveness Grant, available to undergraduate freshman and sophomores who have excellent academic records and have exhibited disposition for leadership and service, and candidates qualifying for this grant must be eligible for Pell Grant. Yet another federal grant is The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, popularly known as National SMART Grant, who awards $4000 to undergraduate juniors or seniors who have chosen to study science, mathematics, engineering, or computer science. For this grant, students have to be eligible for Pell Grant and this grant is in addition to the Pell Grant received by the student.

States also administer many grant programs to the students of their states based on criteria such as merit, need or field of study. For instance, Oklahoma has a provision of need based and specialized grants for students whereas Michigan has grant programs which cater to different sections of students such as low-income, brilliant, and undergraduates students. Likewise, student financial assistance departments in other states also offer wide array of grants.
